Introduction
I did some research into how things are changing in Canada when it comes to solar and energy installations, and I found some interesting things.
If you’re thinking about solar, there’s something you should know before you start shopping for panels, batteries or inverters.
The rules are changing.
And they aren’t the same everywhere in Canada.
What you can install, what permits you need, how much power you can send back to the grid, and what rebates are available can all depend on where you live.
That’s why it’s worth doing a little homework before you buy anything.
Why does this matter?
A solar system isn’t just about buying the right equipment.
Before you spend your money, you need to know what your property allows and what your local utility requires.
For example, some provinces have changed their rules around net metering and how excess solar power is credited.
Some have introduced new incentives, while others have reduced or changed existing programs.
Agricultural properties can have additional land-use requirements, and larger ground-mounted systems may face even more regulations.
And if you’re building a cabin, tiny home, ADU or other alternative home, don’t assume that being remote or off-grid means you don’t need permits.
Electrical, building and zoning requirements can still apply.
It can get confusing quickly
This is one of the reasons I don’t recommend starting with a solar package.
Start with the property, your electrical needs and your goals.
Are you trying to reduce your power bill?
Add battery backup?
Build a completely off-grid system?
Power a cabin, tiny home, workshop or farm?
Those answers determine what kind of system makes sense—and what rules you need to pay attention to.
And the rules are changing
Here in British Columbia, for example, there have been several important changes in 2026 involving renewable energy projects, BC Hydro’s self-generation program, permitting and incentives.
But BC isn’t the only province changing things.
Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec, New Brunswick and other provinces have also made changes or have new rules being introduced or reviewed.
What applies to your neighbour may not apply to you.
That’s why it’s important to check the current requirements for your own province, municipality and utility before making a purchase.
Conclusion
Don’t start with the panels.
Start with the questions.
What am I trying to accomplish?
What does my property allow?
What does my utility allow?
What permits do I need?
What incentives are actually available today?
And what will my system really need to power?
Once you have those answers, designing the system becomes a whole lot easier.
You don’t need to become a solar expert.
You just need to get the right information before you spend the money.
